Judicial investigation into alleged PSOE network: UCO, searches at Ferraz and Sánchez implication

The Guardia Civil's Central Operative Unit (UCO) presented a report to judge Santiago Pedraz concluding that the alleged network led by Santos Cerdán and Leire Díez had as its ultimate objective the protection of the interests of the PSOE, the Spanish government and its president Pedro Sánchez. The report, which followed searches at PSOE headquarters on Calle Ferraz and at the home of Gaspar Zarrías — where €19,850 in cash was found — detailed covert payments through the PSOE, including around €20,000 to the publication Crónica Libre linked to the PSC's 2024 electoral campaign. Judge Pedraz requested documentation on the PSC campaign and summoned Gaspar Zarrías as an investigated person, while the PP summoned Salvador Illa, Leire Díez and others before the Senate investigation commission. Separately, UCO chief Rafael Yuste declared he had received pressure not to be proactive in investigations affecting the government.

Pedro Sánchez announces start of procedures for Spain's 2027 State Budget

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez announced at the closing session of the Cercle d'Economia conference in Barcelona that procedures to draft the 2027 State Budget would be activated that same week, ruling out presenting accounts for 2026. Sánchez said the new budget would be social in character, with housing as a priority and aimed at resolving the regional financing problem, and called on parliamentary forces for responsibility and generosity. The Spanish government has been rolling over its 2023 budget, and the announcement comes amid pressure from Junts and the PNB for early elections. Alberto Núñez Feijóo, who also spoke at the conference, proposed an instrumental motion of no confidence and refused to travel to Waterloo to negotiate with Puigdemont.

Iranian attacks on Kuwait and Bahrain and US response at Qeshm island

Iran launched drone and missile attacks against Kuwait and Bahrain, causing at least one death and 63 injuries at Kuwait's international airport and significant damage to Terminal 1. Iran's Revolutionary Guard claimed the attacks as retaliation for a prior US offensive against an Iranian vessel near the Strait of Hormuz and against a communications tower on Qeshm island. US CENTCOM declared it had intercepted Iranian ballistic missiles and drones and carried out self-defence strikes against a ground control military station on Qeshm. Kuwait suspended commercial flights and Bahrain's authorities activated air-raid sirens, amid a fragile ceasefire between the two countries.

Pope Leo XIV's visit to Catalonia: controversy over Catalan language use and pro-independence mobilisations

Pope Leo XIV's apostolic visit to Catalonia, scheduled for 9–10 June, generated intense controversy over plans for the blessing of the Torre de Jesús at the Sagrada Família to be conducted mainly in Spanish. The Catalan government, the Parlament, pro-independence organisations including the ANC, Òmnium, the Consell de la República and the Lliga Espiritual, Catalan bishops and more than twenty Christian organisations asked the Vatican to prioritise Catalan, while Justice Minister Ramon Espadaler said they had detected receptiveness from the Vatican. At the same time, secular organisations such as the Fundació Ferrer i Guàrdia called a protest on 9 June at the Passeig del Born against the visit, and pro-independence groups called for people to receive the pope with estelades near the Sagrada Família on 10 June. Pope Leo XIV is scheduled to hold a private audience with President Salvador Illa at the Episcopal Palace.

European Union approves new returns regulation toughening deportations

The European Parliament, European Commission and EU Council reached a provisional political agreement on the reform of the Returns Regulation, which extends the maximum administrative detention period to 24 months (extendable to 30), allows the creation of return centres outside EU territory, introduces permanent entry bans for persons deemed a security threat and authorises searches of homes to locate persons subject to deportation orders. The Greens and various migrant rights organisations warned that the regulation could lead to violations of fundamental rights and that Europe is moving towards a migration control model inspired by US practices. The European Commission noted that only one in five persons with an expulsion order is effectively returned to their country of origin.

Teachers' strike: vote on pre-agreement in Catalonia and encampment in Valencia

Catalan teachers voted on the 29 May pre-agreement signed between the Education Department and the unions USTEC, CCOO, UGT and Professors de Secundària, which includes salary improvements of around €600 per month over four years and 6,413 new posts; the result was due on 5 June at noon. Unions including CGT, Intersindical and COS maintained mobilisations, considering the agreement insufficient, and demonstrations took place in Tarragona, the Terres de l'Ebre and other areas. Meanwhile, in the Valencian Community, teachers on indefinite strike since 11 May set up an encampment in Valencia's Plaça de la Mare de Déu, demanding that Education Minister Carmen Ortí sit down for genuine negotiations, amid tension with the Corpus Christi celebrations. The Catalan Parliament approved a motion urging the government to withdraw the pilot scheme for plainclothes Mossos in schools.

The Second Section of the Valencia Provincial Court upheld Carlos Mazón's appeal and accepted his participation as a party in the judicial case investigating the management of the DANA, which caused more than 200 deaths. The ruling, supported by the prosecution, overturned the criterion of the Catarroja investigating judge, who had rejected the request, and noted that if the participation were not accepted, Mazón would be deprived of knowledge of the judicial activity affecting him. The formal investigation is directed at former minister Salomé Pradas and Emergency Secretary Emilio Argüeso, while the Superior Court of Justice had previously rejected the judge's request to formally charge Mazón.

The judge ordered an investigation into the possible involvement of family psychologist J.L., who allegedly encouraged Isak Andic to grant a living inheritance to his son, and requested from Vodafone the communications of Jonathan Andic's phone between 21 and 26 March 2025, coinciding with a quick trip to Ecuador during which his mobile phone disappeared under strange circumstances. The Mossos d'Esquadra reconstructed the timeline of the fall and detected contradictions in Jonathan Andic's statements; he is in provisional detention under a one-million-euro bail.
